The majority of us have tried the spirit Tequila at some point in our lives, but few of us know much more than receiving a shot glass accompanied with salt and lime. Following the Tequila trail and staying in one of many
Mexico hotels can provide the opportunity to find out the culture, history and the development of one of the world's favourite spirits.
Tequila hails from in and around the town of Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Mexico hotels in the Jalisco area can be a fantastic base to take in the local culture or to start to explore the Tequila trail.
History
There are many myths and urban legends regarding the history of Tequila. It is widely acknowledged that the natives of Mexico were fermenting sap from the Blue Agave plant long before Spanish Conquistadors used a distillation process which formed Tequila as we know it and helped its global spread.
Production
Jose Cuervo and Sauza are the two major global producers of Tequila although there are more than 140 registered Tequila producers in the 100 mile radius that surrounds the town of Tequila in the state of Jalisco. In order to be officially classified as Tequila, there are various criteria which must be met including being made from no less than 51% Blue Agave.
The trail
The Tequila trail allows tourists to take the opportunity to have an insight in to the culture behind the drink. Archaeological sites can be explored including opal mines, distilleries and the magnificent Agavero landscape - including the Tequila volcano. Holidaymakers will find numerous
Mexico hotels along the route, so finding accommodation shouldn't be a worry. Just establish where you are staying before enjoying too many spirits.
The worm
Contrary to popular belief the Tequila worm serves little purpose. It was in fact merely a marketing gimmick introduced in the early 1940's. The worm itself is actually a type of larvae often found on the Blue Agave plant. It is not a Mexican tradition to put it in a bottle of Tequila.
Tequila consumption
There are two types of Tequila, 100% Blue Agave Tequila and 'mixtos' Tequila. The latter is distilled with other ingredients as well Blue Agave.
Tequila is enjoyed in many different ways around the globe. It is the base to many cocktails including the Margarita. Many people see it as shot, best taken with salt and lime, whereas others prefer to drink it on its own, savouring the unique flavour.
The only way to get a true insight and an understanding into the culture behind the drink is to visit the destination. Staying in one of the many
Mexico hotels can be the start of a unique Tequila experience.
